  • a vast spherical barrier initially surrounding each solar system with sentient life; Envelopes are one-way in nature, allowing life forms inside to send communications or spacecraft out of the barrier but preventing outsiders from visiting or communicating with life inside the Envelope; an Envelope spontaneously dissolves after the sentients inside send a manned spacecraft out of it; Envelopes have no effect on natural phenomena

  • Spanish, a language commonly spoken before the Arrival in the former countries of the United States and Spain and throughout what is now Upper Glana; Espaniyol is still widely spoken in Upper Glana and through much of Lower Glana; the tone and accent of Espaniyol is similar to Niloto, allowing it to be spoken clandestinely in areas where languages other than Niloto are not tolerated

  • small, centrally located island state housing the Galactic officials who monitor Kofira's colonization; Freeport is governed by a committee consisting of Kofines, Periluns, Faëtsel, and Tordredi

Galactic Diet
noun
  • the supreme legislative body governing the affairs of all races in the known galaxy who belong to the Clade; due to the hugeness of its jurisdiction, the Galactic Diet only legislates on the most serious and weighty matters, usually concerning wars, treaties, colonization, technological proliferation, and the most apocalyptic disasters; when necessary, the Galactic Diet also coordinates communications with its sister administrations in other clades; not all species governed by the Diet have equal representation: voting rights and committee membership are hierarchical, gained over many centuries, and are not fully described to races newly initiated

  • telecommunications network connecting most computing devices, copulas, entertainment systems, and the like for information exchange; subscribers think of the Service as a single, unitary network, but it is, in practice, operated in a distributed fashion by several corporations or governments; all but the most primitive sentients operate some version of the Service on a planetary scale; protocols exist to make communication between different implementations of the Service possible, even over interstellar distances, by renting time on Kel starlinks

  • organizational unit within Perilun society, merging notions of both family and political party; set affiliations and alliances are the prime motive force in Perilun politics; sets have parallels to the noble houses of old Kofira, but membership is determined by more than just heredity and marriage

silk fever

  • highly contagious xenonotic bacterial infection characterized by fever, headache, nausea, abdominal pain, and muscular weakness and paralysis, which sometimes become permanent among survivors because of damage to the central nervous system; silk fever affects Periluns, Kofines, and a number of other mammaloids, but Periluns rarely develop the skin lesions which heal and form the white, silky scars that give the disease its name; infected Kofines nearly always suffer from the lesions and, in roughly one out of two cases, succumb to the disease

  • cable system dozens of thousands of kilometers long whose center of mass is in geostationary orbit around the planet it is tethered to; by running up a skyhook cable, spacecraft are able to reach escape velocity at a fraction of the energy cost of rocketry; skyhook construction requires a high degree of technological sophistication in both materials engineering and space construction; skyhooks are the most cost effective means known for moving payloads into orbit; three skyhooks are in operation on Kofira: the Kel-operated Lingga skyhook, the Perilun-operated Pedernales skyhook, and the Faëtsel-operated Kobékobe (often called Libreville) skyhook

  • planet claimed as a Perilun colony many centuries in the past; Tarquise has little tourism and was colonized because of its rich deposits of fissionable materials, most of which have been mined away; historically, Tarquise is notable because of the role it played in funding and organizing the Perilun rebellion against the Nilots; the Perilun population of Tarquise comprises most of the remaining speakers of Old Perilun

throatfly

  • small, flying carnivorous hive-dwelling creature whose length is between 5 and 8 centimeters as an adult; although throatflies look like insects from a distance and birds with teeth on closer examination, the Unified Taxonomy classifies them as mammaloids because they have live birth and nurse their young; throatflies excavate holes in the ground and build dirt hives holding hundreds and occasionally thousands of individuals; rodents, lizards, small mammals, and birds often fall into the holes containing throatfly hives where they are trapped and killed, but throatflies sometimes swarm out of their hives to hunt larger game; dherka, deer, kine, and even unwary Periluns and Kofines have been killed by throatflies; throatflies are native to Lesser Peri but are adaptable and have become a hazard to the countryside of Kofira since their accidental introduction
